Walt Whitman was born in 1819 in New York. He is often recognized as one of the first true American poets. Whitman started publishing his writings in 1839. Walt's first book, Leaves of Grass, was republished nineteen times! Whitman's brother was wounded in the Civil War at the Battle of Fredricksburg. Whitman had a stroke in the 1850's, and he died in 1892. Whitman is known as the "Good Gray Poet." He wrote about the "common man," and diversity.
